To begin with, I'd like to point out that, indeed, this novel feels like a travel diary. For instance, we can clearly picture him travelling from New York to the American West.

To begin with, I'd like to point out that Moon palace is more a travel diary because he speaks about his personal experience like when him and his uncle went to the cinema together. There they learned that the main character of the movie and Marco have the same surname.

To respond to Alicia and Lilou , I agree that it cannot be denied that moon palace contains elements belonging to the theme of travel and exploration, but it is inaccurate to reduce it to a simple travel diary .

A true travel diary focuses on documenting landscapes and observations . In contrast , Marco spends most of his time immobile since he’s in his apartment reading books , then starving on a bench .

No, you're wrong because in the idea Diary there's the idea of  feeling. We can see in the first chapter that he spend a long speaking about his feelings like the time he telling us about the day he broke his last 2 eggs.

I agree that Marco describes his inner feelings in detail, such as his emotional reaction when breaking his last two eggs. However, expressing feelings is not exclusive to a diary; it is actually the core of a Bildungsroman

Well... upon reflection, I can't help thinking that Esla is right because the novel is more about a quest for identity and self-discovery than an exploration of American scenery.

Moreover, it is evident that Marco Fogg is going through a coming-of-age period. The novel takes us through his transition from youth to maturity. Did you get my point ?
